Not Just Cartilage
The temporomandibular joint (also known as TMJ) complex consists of the disc, ligaments, bones, and muscles of the jaw joints. They work in conjunction every day to produce the movements needed for chewing, speaking, breathing, and making facial expressions.
Because of the variety of structures present, treatment of TMJ pain can be complex and require multiple different approaches. Fortunately, many of the most effective approaches are minimally invasive and reversible.
A large majority of TMJ pain arises from the muscles that surround and control the joint itself.
Multiple Parts, Multiple Ways
Our team is experienced in the different treatment modalities of TMJ pain, including Botox(R) injections. These injections help relax the muscles of TMJ complex and reduce inflammation for extended periods of time while having virtually no effects in other areas of the body.
Other treatments conducted at our practice include the joint steroid injections in cases of severe joint locking, clicking, or popping leading to limited jaw motion.
Dr. Sun continues to lecture on TMJ pain and their treatments at a number of universities, CE courses, and dental residency programs.
